Every Sunday morning, at a co-working space in Ameerpet, enthusiastic couples are busy getting intimate and romantic while mastering the art of tango. “It’s a tango dance session in progress,” says Prasad BSN, the man behind these tango dance camps in the city. Tango is an Argentinian social dance that is known to help people open up, lose their inhibitions, and get a good workout while a piece of melodious music plays in the background.
An advocate by the week and a dance instructor by the weekend, Prasad, who’s in his 60’s, is the founder of the Hyderabad Tango Society which started last December. A vacation to Puducherry in 2013 exposed him to a tango workshop at Auroville. “Out of curiosity I attended a session and enjoyed it so thoroughly that I keep going back to Auroville to learn it enough to teach others,” he says.
Prasad wanted to introduce Hyderabad to something novel and exotic. In the last seven months, he has trained over 30 Hyderabadis in tango, a dance that requires two people (tanguero-man and tanguera-woman) to dance in sync.
The participants are taught the fundamentals of the dance form on Sunday and are invited for a practice class on Wednesday followed by a social dancing session on Saturday. “We only need a smooth floor to teach tango,” he says.
Most people find out about these classes through word of mouth or their Facebook page (Hyderabad Tango Society) and Instagram page @TangoInHyderabad.

There is another such dance group called Hyderabad Tango Community that meets at Aaromale or 100 Feet Studio on weekends. n MANJU
