Launched by businessman Srujan Pamu on June 15, Khadi Culture aims to re-introduce the traditional hand-spun textile and pass it down, like a precious heirloom, to younger generations. Describing the brand Srujan states, “It is a new-age Khadi Bhandar.”
Located in Sainikpuri, the store opens to an 1,800 sq.ft. area spread across two floors. Curated predominantly for men, the ground floor houses a wide collection of designer readymades on the left, a sizeable collection of colorful fabric rolls, especially in whites, which can be customized as per the customer’s wishes on the right, and a wide range of wedding wear and accessories on the first floor.
With pure handwoven khadi created by older brands like Ruby and Mafatlal that are date back to 1905, the fabric rolls are aplenty and rich in variety. They have khadi jute, khadi cotton and khadi silk, all available in different hues and prints. They also stock matka silk, raw silk (used mostly to create trousers), Arvind and paper cotton, fil-a-fil, jacquard and yarn and twill-based linen, to name a few. With the help of their in-house tailor, women can choose from a variety of fabrics to get kurtis and salwars stitched as well.
The readymades cover an array of kurtas, including knee-and shirt length ones. The minimalistic short ones are wellsuited for denim pants. They also sell Pochampally kurtas, lungis, dhotis, and kurta pyjamas sets for both men and children. Made from khadi cotton, pure cotton, sequin and Lucknow chikankari by brands like Ramaas, Leevone, Ramraj and Minister White, there’s a lot to choose from.
Upstairs, displayed neatly, is a wedding wear collection from their in-house brand Culture. The collection includes sherwanis, Jodhpuri suits, open kurta Indie sets made from khadi, silk, cotton, jacquard, velvet that can be paired with accessories like malas, sherwani, dupattas and pagdis. The wine color sherwani that was elegantly displayed on a mannequin was the piece we were drawn to the most. n IPSHITA
