Ocean’s 11 and more

If your kids are besotted with Finding Nemo or The Little Mermaid and want to know more about marine life, you can give them a glimpse right here, in land-locked Hyderabad. Earlier this year, during the month of April, Hyderabadis were treated to a one-of-a-kind underwater tunnel aquarium. Set up at Kukatpally, the expo, held for nearly 60 days, has now relocated to Sun City for the next two months. It has been organized by Funworld and Handloom Handicraft Fun-Fair.

The aquarium provides a 180-degree view of vibrant aquatic life, including clownfish, starfish, angelfish, wrasses, seahorses, eels, boxfish and a whole lot more. Right at the top of the food chain is the arapaima. It is the largest fish you will encounter at the expo. With an upturned mouth and an unusually long body, this giant fish will enthrall your impressionable tots. Valued at Rs 6 lakh, the arapaima weighs 60 kg and chows down one-and-a-half kilos of chicken every day.

Keeping in mind the aquatic food chain and the hierarchical workings of the sea world, the organizers are vigilant when segregating the fishes for their placement in the 20 aquarium tanks present. “You cannot mix them up. They will eat each other if you mix them up as you wish,” shares Bharat Reddy, the expo’s manager. These fishes could also prove to be a threat to humans looking for trouble. “You place your hand inside the aquarium, they will surely bite,” he states matter-of-factly.

The aquarium is 300 meters in length and 60 meters in width. It houses

Tip: The weekends see large crowds coming in. If you can, plan your trip to the expo during weekdays over 3,000 fishes from 500 unique saltwater and freshwater species that are sourced from Malaysia, Singapore and Kerala. Get your cameras ready as you enter. You first see a set of smaller aquariums that are placed in a row. They lead you to the star attraction that awaits under an oceanic domelike structure. The portable tunnel can hold 2,000 liters of water and can be split into eight different sections while being transported in containers during relocation.

The expo, which takes over a month to set up, also includes amusement rides and a large variety of stalls housing artisans from across the country.

The expo is a different kind of outing you can go for with your entire family.
